The 7 Sacraments Definitions:
- Wisdom: This spiritual gift is knowledge of Divine Things. Wisdom empowers a person to judge and order all things in accordance with divine norms and with a connaturality that flows from a loving union with God.
- Understanding: Through this gift we grasp the things that are proposed by Faith. Through understanding we gain a certitude about our beliefs that moves beyond Faith. By it we can understand the very essence of the truths of the Catholic Faith.
- Counsel: Also known as the Gift of Right Judgment, the Gift of Counsel is the practical knowledge of right judgment in regard to individual actions. It is the ability to judge how best to act in defense of the Faith. It is the perfection of the Cardinal Virtue of Prudence.
- Fortitude: Fortitude is firmness in difficulties and constancy in pursuit of the good. We are no longer afraid to stand up for God and His truths and will stand up for good against evil. Through Fortitude, we are convicted to take a stand when the occasion arises.
- Knowledge: The Gift of Knowledge is right judgment about created things. It means you can know rightly what you should believe and what you should not in regard to created things and how to rightly act out your faith on a daily basis.
- Piety: Piety gives the proper duty, homage and honor to God, our parents and our country. Piety is first owed to God as our Father. Through it, we pay the honor, duty and homage that is due to our parents because of what we owe them as their children. Piety also corresponds to Justice.
- Fear of the Lord: This Gift ensures our awe and reverence before God and withdraws us from evil for fear of Him. It corresponds to the virtue of Temperance. The Gift of Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom because it comes from the understanding of God’s Divine Excellence.
The7 Deadly Sins
Since the definitions of the 7 Deadly Sins are not in the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Baltimore Catechism, these are sourced from Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae and the Online Catholic Encyclopedia. The visuals help kids understand what the seven deadly sins are, and how they can extend to different kinds of sins. Especially if your children are little, these images are easy to explain without taking away their innocence. The images are interesting enough to discuss them with your older students/children as well. The visuals help with memorization and keeping the attention.
